Here at Newfangled...
We aim to breed to the best possible standards of breeding with the objective of producing physically healthy and mentally strong puppies from happy, well loved health tested parents. Puppies that are as close to the breed standard as possible and have correct temperment. We are looking to find the best possible homes for our puppies and give a lifetime of support and advice to our puppy owners. We do home and reference check our hopeful puppy owners but you needn't worry about that as we aren't looking for the perfect house n the nicest estate, just the safest homes and the best possible families.
We are accredited breeders with the Northern Newfoundland Club and adhear to all of the rules of the better breeder scheme set up by the Southern Newfoundland Club http://newfoundlandpuppybreeders.uk/newfangled.html
As a result of bad breeding, we often see Newfoundlands now that are unhealthy, aggressive, and look nothing like the breed they should be. We aim to breed for three core areas - health, type and temperament which I have outlined below...

As a result of bad breeding, we often see Newfoundlands now that are unhealthy, aggressive, and look nothing like the breed they should be. We aim to breed for three core areas - health, type and temperament which I have outlined below...
Health
Health
All dogs, can suffer from health issues. In the case of Newfoundlands, the principal (hereditary) health concerns are: Orthopaedic issues:
Other issues:
(More information can be found in a book we will provide before your puppy comes home. Information is also available online) It is imperitive that any Newfoundland that is to be bred from is screened against hereditary problems within our breed. All of our dogs have been BVA hip and elbow scored (x-rays taken and evaluated by the British Veterinary Association). They have had their hearts scanned by echo doppler echocardiography and have been tested for Cystinuria. |
Type
Breed type is essentially the whole of the characteristics that are typical of a breed.
It is our job as breeders to not only breed healthy dogs of sound temperament, but to also breed dogs fit for purpose. We show our dogs to have them evaluated against the breed standard by judges so we can find the strengths and weaknesses within individual dogs to make calculated breeding decisions (such as not putting weakness with a weakness) to then improve on the breed. Simply putting two Newfoundlands together and hoping the puppies will turn out like a breed standard Newfoundland isn't enough. If a dog is not built right then it can not move right... and if it can not move right then it can not in turn do what it was bred to do. |
Temperment
Sweetness of temperament is the hallmark of the Newfoundland. This is a vibrant breed who adores being around people, and wants to be included in all aspects of family life. ''Natures babysitters'' They get along famously with children, remaining patient when kids want to climb all over them, whether at play, or simply to snuggle up to relax in the evening. Perhaps the most famous Newfoundland was Nana, the dog from Peter Pan, who watched over the Darling children.
That being said, every Newfoundland isn't going to be calm all of the time and training is paramount. Our dogs are very true to the temperament of the Newfoundland, they are very loving and sweet natured giants. Cuddling up on the sofa is their favorite thing to do. Take heed: It isn't always ''Gentle'' when you have been out for a while and return home to four giant dogs rushing to greet you and bide for your attention. |
